Project overview

This project was a key component in strengthening Biggleswade Town Centre’s economy, helping to achieve Central Bedfordshire County’s (CBC) aspirations for future growth of the town and surrounding area. It followed a successful developer-led planning application.

Our role, as highways consultant, was to undertake the detailed design for the main junction improvement off the A1 accessing Biggleswade from the south. By increasing capacity of the trunk road and adjacent local road network, we have provided the infrastructure needed for new homes, businesses and employment.

Our approach

The junction improvement scheme included the reconstruction of the existing A1/A6001 London Road roundabout from a two lane to a three-lane circulatory carriageway. An additional lane was provided to the north and southbound approach dual carriageways as well as a new west arm off the ovalabout junction.

We coordinated all design activities, including detailed negotiations with the client and its financial consultants, and liaised with HA and CBC on the design approval. We arranged road safety audits and site investigations as well as surveys, environmental and ecological studies, and Traffic Regulation Orders.

We also supervised delivery on behalf of the project manager, EC Harris, providing input at all stages of the 28-week contract, from planning, through design and construction.
