Description
Understanding mobility as part of the changing lifestyles across Europe
experts surveyed
Project overview
The MIND-SETS project provided a new approach to understanding mobility mindsets across Europe, focused on understanding mobility in terms of lifestyle patterns, set against social, economic and technological trends.
It brought mainstream sociologists, environmental psychologists and economists together with sustainable mobility and travel behaviour specialists to assess mobility issues, in the hopes of changing the professional mind-set of mobility stakeholders.
Alongside our team, the consortium included The Institute of Studies for the Integration of Systems (ISIS), Vlaamse Instelling Voor Technologisch Onderzoek N.V. (VITO), European Integrated Project – EIP, Technion Israel Institute of Technology, MCRIT S.L., The University of Groningen and Pocket Marketing.
Our approach
The research reviewed current technological and sociological trends, and analysed existing knowledge on how they affect travel behaviour, focusing on the following areas:
- The impact of ICT social networks and social media on travel behaviour
- Transportation-telecommunications relationships (i.e. teleworking, teleshopping)
- Urban forms and the built environment
- The impact of new vehicle technologies and new infrastructure on travel behaviour
- The use of social media in public transportation
- Data characteristics applied to current transportation models
Approximately 500 experts in the field of mobility were asked to complete a DELPHI survey as part of the process.
The insight and analysis led to the development of the MIND-SETS guidelines and Knowledge Centre http://mobilitybehaviour.eu, which were designed to help practitioners make better decisions regarding mobility, taking user behaviour and psychology into consideration.
