Project overview

Vectos was appointed by LXB in early 2012 to undertake the highway designs associated with the redevelopment of two sites within Stafford Town Centre.

The Riverside site, which links to the town via a new Civic Centre, comprises multiple retail units over 22,000 sqm including Marks & Spencer as well as a new 1,000-space, multi-storey car park. The Kingsmead site is home to a 6,600 sqm Morrisons store and leisure facilities, with 450 parking spaces.

The developments form a major part of the council’s aspirations for the economic growth of the town centre.

Our approach

We undertook the detailed design of the highways works, including the diversion of some existing services.

At Riverside, we created a shared surface road providing pedestrian links to the Civic Centre, as well as vehicular access to the new and existing car parks and service yards. We also coordinated the design and approval of a sheet pile wall retaining the adjacent public highway, the A34, as it spans the River Sow.

The Kingsmead scheme introduced a new left-hand turn lane and junction arm of an existing signalised junction on the A34 dual carriageway, improved pedestrian connectivity with the town centre and an access road for service vehicles and staff parking.
