Project overview

LCR, the Department for Transport and Network Rail are bringing the former Eurostar terminal back into use after almost a decade. The plans will create around 135,000 sq ft of space for a mix of modern independent, high street and food stores, spread across three floors. Several new western entrances will also be built to provide access to rail and underground services for people living and working to the south of the station.

The restoration of Waterloo International Terminal (WIT) will complement local businesses and the wider regeneration of the Southbank and Leake Street, as well as benefit the local area by creating improved links to Leake Street and Lower Marsh. It will provide the biggest increase in capacity for decades at the UK’s busiest station by reopening platforms 20-24 for use by domestic services.

Our approach

We were engaged by LCR to provide traffic and transport advice in relation to the proposed development.

The key challenge was developing a servicing strategy that met the demands of a modern shopping centre while minimising the potential for conflict with pedestrians and cyclists.

The project involved extensive engagement with local communities, councillors and officers at Lambeth Council, ultimately resulting in support for the project and planning approval being granted in November 2016.
