Project overview

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is host to The Championships, a two-week event that attracts 500,000 spectators and employs some 10,000 staff. When not hosting the tennis tournament, it operates as a private members’ club.

The Wimbledon 2020 masterplan guides the long-term development of the club and its facilities over the next 15 to 20 years. It sets out a vision for the future of the club’s grounds and is a framework against which future development will be assessed and refined.

Vectos was appointed by the AELTC in February 2013 to provide transport advice in relation to the Club’s emerging Wimbledon 2020 Masterplan.

Our approach

We acted as transport consultant to the AELTC during preparation of the masterplan, liaising closely with the club to understand year-round as well as Championships’ operations.

We undertook an extensive data collection exercise during the 2013 Championships to review the transport operation of this unique event, the largest data collection study ever commissioned by the AELTC. This was analysed to understand the transport operation and how, through development of the masterplan, it could be improved in the future.

In addition, extensive studies were undertaken to assess how any changes would affect the Championships in terms of transport including accessibility, sustainability, servicing, design, vehicular movement and pedestrian movement.
